Convenient holiday bungalows in Anuradhapura
Kuttam Pokuna, or Twin Ponds, situated within the Abhayagiri Monastery complex in Anuradhapura, are ancient bathing ponds likely used by the monastery's monks. While the exact origins of these ponds remain unclear, they are generally believed to have been constructed during the reign of King Aggabodhi I, around 575-608 AD.
The Twin Ponds (ancient bathing ponds) exemplify the advanced hydraulic engineering of ancient Sri Lanka and continue to be admired for their historical significance and aesthetic beauty.
These ancient bathing ponds are notable for their differing sizes; the northern pond measures 91 feet (28 meters) in length, whereas the southern pond extends to 132 feet (40 meters). It is thought that the smaller northern pond was built first, with the larger southern pond added later. The architectural layout of the twin ponds reflects a thoughtful expansion of the facility, possibly to accommodate the growing number of monks at the monastery.
