Excellent Holiday Rentals in ancient Anuradhapura.
The Thuparama Stupa is the first stupa built in Sri Lanka following the introduction of Buddhism under King Devanampiyatissa. Constructed at the request of Arhat Mahinda Thero, it enshrines Lord Buddha's collarbone.
Originally built as a residential complex for monks, it was named "Stupa Arama" (Stupa Monastery), which eventually evolved into Thuparama. Its design resembles a heap of paddy, a nod to its cultural and agricultural context.
The dagoba measures 59 feet in diameter at the base and has a dome that stands 11 feet and 4 inches high. It is encircled by a granite compound and two rows of stone pillars. These pillars historically supported a ring-shaped roof structure that protected the dagoba, demonstrating a sophisticated blend of spiritual significance and architectural resilience.
The remaining ruins around Thuparamaya make one imagine how beautiful it must have been more than 2000 years ago.
