The Sri Maha Bodhi is one of the most sacred sites in Sri Lanka. It is a revered sapling grown from the original Bodhi Tree under which Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment in India.
The tree was brought to Sri Lanka in the 3rd century BC during the reign of King Devanampiyatissa by Sanghamitta Theri, daughter of Emperor Ashoka. Since then, it has become one of the most venerated living religious monuments in the world and a central spiritual symbol of Anuradhapura.
Thousands of devotees and visitors gather here every day to offer prayers, flowers, and quiet reflection, recognising the tree’s profound religious, cultural, and historical significance.
The beautiful sand terrace surrounding the sacred tree provides a calm, serene environment, ideal for quiet contemplation, gentle walks, or meditation, while experiencing the peaceful atmosphere of this historic sacred city.
