Excellent Holiday Rentals in ancient Anuradhapura.
Mirisaweti Stupa, located about a kilometer west of Sri Maha Bodhi, is one of the eight sacred places (Atamasthana) in the historic city of Anuradhapura. This stupa is the first dagaba that the renowned King Dutugemunu constructed during his reign from 161 to 137 BC.
According to legend, King Dutugemunu built Mirisaweti Stupa as an act of atonement to the Buddhist monks after he inadvertently omitted to offer a chili curry during an almsgiving.
The stupa had deteriorated over time but was comprehensively restored in the 1980s. This restoration conserved an important architectural landmark and reinvigorated a vital spiritual center in Anuradhapura, preserving its heritage for future generations.
