Lankarama is recognised as one of the eight sacred sites (Atamasthana) in the ancient city of Anuradhapura and remains a popular destination for pilgrims and visitors alike.
Like many historical monuments in Anuradhapura, Lankarama experienced periods of decline over time but has since been restored through conservation efforts, preserving its cultural and religious significance.
Constructed during the reign of King Valagamba (88–76 BC), this elegant medium-sized stupa is located about one kilometre North-West of Thuparamaya.
Archaeological excavations at the site have revealed rows of stone pillars, indicating that the stupa was once surrounded by a Vatadage (circular relic house). This feature highlights the architectural sophistication of the period and adds to the historical importance of this sacred site.
Today, Lankarama stands as a peaceful and spiritually significant monument, reflecting the rich heritage of ancient Anuradhapura.
