One of the eight main attractions in Anuradhapura.
Lankarama is recognized as one of the eight sacred sites (Atamasthana) in Anuradhapura. Constructed during the reign of King Walagamba from 88 to 76 BC, this medium-sized stupa is situated about a kilometer north of Thuparama.
Lankarama, like many of Anuradhapura's monumental historical and religious structures, experienced periods of neglect throughout history. However, it was later revitalized as part of the extensive restoration initiatives undertaken in Anuradhapura.
Archaeological excavations at the site revealed rows of stone pillars, indicating that a vatadage, a circular structure designed to encase the stupa, once existed. This discovery underscores Lankarama's architectural prowess and cultural importance in the rich historical tapestry of Anuradhapura.
