Excellent Holiday Rentals in ancient Anuradhapura.
Located about a kilometer east of Ruwanweliseya, the Jethawanarama stupa features a monumental brick structure constructed by King Mahasena in the 3rd century AD.
The proximity of Jethawana Monastery to Mahavihara led to boundary disputes, ultimately leading to its segregation from Mahavihara. Recent archaeological efforts have uncovered that the stupa's foundation extends 28 feet deep, anchoring into bedrock, and the structure soars to an impressive height of 400 feet.
Jethawanaramaya, the tallest stupa of its time, was a central feature of the monastery, which housed over 3000 monks during its peak in the 3rd century AD.
Ruins and remnants of various structures spread over a large area of the Jethawanrama monastery site show how magnificent the monastery was then.
