Excellent Holiday Rentals in ancient Anuradhapura.
The Abayagiri Stupa, constructed by King Walagamba in the 1st century BC, is situated within the Abayagiri Vihara, once the largest monastery complex in the Anuradhapura kingdom. Abhayagiri Monastery had evolved into a renowned international Buddhist institution by the first century AD. Spanning approximately 200 hectares, the monastery comprised all essential elements of a Buddhist temple and additional structures to support its vast community.
According to the accounts of Fa-Hsien, a Chinese Buddhist monk who visited and studied at Abayagiri from 411 to 413 AD, about 5,000 monks resided in Abayagiri Vihara at the time, highlighting its importance as a center for Buddhist learning and practice.
As one of Anuradhapura's eight significant pilgrimage sites, Abhayagiri remains a revered destination for Buddhists worldwide.
